Filling the tank to 80% leaves enough space for the propane to safely expand, reducing the risk of over-pressuring the tank and venting fuel through the tank’s built-in pressure relief valve. Modern propane tanks have special valves that safely release a small amount of fuel if the pressure inside gets too high.
