Why We Fill Your Tank To 80% During A Propane Delivery

Part 4: Understanding Your Propane Tank

Why We Fill Your Tank To 80% During A Propane Delivery.

When you receive a propane delivery from Hall, you might notice we fill your tank to only 80% capacity. Based on National Fire Protection Association guidelines, this practice is standard in the propane industry. Let’s take a look inside the propane system to explain the 80% rule.

The Science Behind The 80% Rule.

During a propane delivery, we fill your tank to 80% as a preventative safety measure that protects against fluctuations inside the tank. Like most liquids and gases, propane expands at elevated temperatures. If your propane tank is filled to 80% on a cool April day, that same volume of fuel can expand over 80% on a hot summer day. Filling the tank to 80% leaves enough space for the propane to safely expand, reducing the risk of over-pressuring the tank and venting fuel through the tank’s built-in pressure relief valve. Modern propane tanks have special valves that safely release a small amount of fuel if the pressure inside gets too high.

Overfilling Degrades Performance & Efficiency.

Filling your tank to 80% allows your propane system to operate at peak performance and efficiency. When a tank is overfilled, liquid propane can enter the gas lines and cause inefficient performance of your appliances and potential damage. With the 80% rule, we ensure your propane system runs smoothly, and your appliances operate efficiently.

Smart Link

Monitor Your Propane Levels With Smart Link.

To help you manage your propane levels, Hall’s remote tank monitoring program, Smart Link, integrates tank monitoring with propane delivery requests. With Smart Link, we install a monitoring device on top of your propane tank, which uses cellular technology to send you usage data through an easy-to-use monitoring app.

Available for any Hall customer on will-call or Autofill, Smart Link offers unparalleled convenience and peace of mind. For Autofill customers, the app sends a push notification when levels get low, automatically triggering a propane delivery. Will-call customers with Smart Link can also set up push notifications to alert them when it’s time to request a refill. You can even order fuel directly in the Smart Link app or in MyFuelPortal.
