Is propane environmentally friendly?
Yes, propane is a clean-burning fuel that produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions than many other energy sources. The EPA recognizes it as an environmentally friendly energy option.
Propane Tanks & Service:
Can I switch to Hall if another company has a tank on my property?
Yes, you can switch to Hall! We don’t charge a tank setup fee when replacing a tank from another provider. Once you switch, we’ll send a legally required notice to your previous provider, letting them know to retrieve their tank. While we can move the old tank to the side, it’s up to the previous provider to pick it up. Customers are welcome to contact their former provider directly as a reminder. Fill out our form to get started today!
Do you charge a fee to set up a propane tank on my property?
Tank setup is free for new customers. Additional installation fees may apply for gas lines or appliances. You can find more information on our tanks page.
Can Hall help with permits or approvals needed for tank installation?
Yes, we assist with necessary permits and approvals to ensure compliance with local codes.
How do I know what size propane tank I need?
Our team can assess your home’s energy needs and recommend the ideal tank size for efficient propane use based on initial equipment information received from the homeowner. Contact us for a consultation or learn more about our tanks.
Can I install a propane tank underground?
Yes, we offer both above-ground and underground tanks. Our experts can help determine which option best suits your property. Ongoing cathodic maintenance is required for underground tanks to ensure tank integrity. Contact us for a consultation.
Do I need to buy my propane tank?
We supply most of our customers with a tank because of the high upfront cost of owning one (typically $1,000–$5,000). This affordable option requires only a one-time hook-up fee and sometimes even a free installation.
To keep fuel prices competitive, we aim to use our tanks efficiently. We ask customers with one of our tanks to use at least 1.5 times its capacity annually (for example, a 100-gallon tank would require 150 gallons of propane each year). If your usage changes over time, we’ll work with you to adjust your tank size if needed. Contact us to discuss the best option for your needs.
Who is responsible for maintaining my propane tank?
If Hall provides your propane tank, we take care of the cost associated with the tank and regulator(s), such as maintenance, property tax, recertification, cathodic protection, etc. It is the owner’s responsibility to maintain customer-owned tanks for long-lasting performance.
What kind of maintenance does a propane tank require?
Routine inspections and general upkeep are recommended for all tanks to ensure safety and efficiency. Hall covers the maintenance of leased tanks. There is a standard service call at our hourly rate to inspect customer-owned tanks for safety.
How do I read the propane gauge on my tank?
The gauge shows the propane level as a percentage. If it reads 20% or lower, it’s time to schedule a refill. Smart Link is Hall’s innovative remote tank monitoring program that simplifies level readings and refill requests. We can assist with reading your gauge if you need help.
Emergency & Support:
What should I do in case of a gas smell or a propane leak?
If you smell gas, which smells like rotting eggs, contact Hall during business hours or Hall’s emergency after-hours support line immediately. Our emergency service is one of the many reasons customers trust Hall—it’s a vital resource for residential and commercial clients, ensuring your family and staff stay safe while maintaining consistent power.
What is considered an emergency?
Hall emergency service is NOT a replacement for fire, police or EMS. If you have an immediate emergency, please contact 911. Emergencies include smelling propane inside, suspecting a leak, running out of fuel during extreme cold with no backup heat source or damaging a gas pipe while digging. For emergency assistance, call us at your local office number.
Propane Appliances & Usage:
Can I use propane if I already have natural gas?
Yes, propane and natural gas can complement each other, and we can install or convert appliances if needed. Generators are an excellent backup during supply interruptions.
Can I use my propane fireplace during a power outage?
Most propane fireplaces and heaters operate without electricity, making them great heat sources during outages. Our team can recommend models if backup heating is a priority.
At what temperature should I set my propane water heater?
Setting your propane water heater to 120°F to 130° (49°C) for safety and energy efficiency is generally recommended. This temperature is hot enough for everyday use while reducing the risk of scalding and minimizing energy costs. If you have specific needs, such as sanitizing, consult your water heater’s manual or contact us for further guidance.
How does a tankless water heater work?
A tankless water heater heats water on demand as it flows through the unit, providing a continuous hot water supply without needing a storage tank. When you turn on a hot water tap, cold water passes over a propane burner or heating element that instantly warms it. This efficient design means you’ll never run out of hot water, making it a convenient, energy-saving choice for any home.
What are the benefits of tankless water heaters?
With a long lifespan of up to 20 years, they outlast traditional models, and their compact size frees up valuable space. Plus, tankless systems provide endless hot water to simultaneously enjoy showers, laundry, and dishes. These benefits make tankless heaters a smart, economical choice for reliable comfort all year round!

How can I avoid running out of propane?
We recommend enrolling in Autofill or signing up for Smart Link remote tank monitoring to ensure you never unexpectedly run out of propane.
What happens if I run out of propane?
If you run out of propane, it can lead to safety risks and potential damage to your system. Here’s what you need to know and do to avoid or handle a fuel outage:
- Safety Risks: An empty tank can cause damage to your regulator and appliances, which may lead to costly repairs and potential damage.
- Monitor Tank Levels: Regularly check your gauge and aim to refill when it reaches 20%.
Order in Advance: Don’t wait until the last minute, especially during peak seasons. - Enroll in Auto-Fill or Smart Link: These services help prevent outages by scheduling refills or alerting you when fuel is low.
- In Case of an Outage: Turn off all propane appliances and contact us immediately for an emergency refill and safety check.
Hall is legally obligated to perform a leak check on your system during an outage. Will Call customers may be responsible for these charges. Will Call customers will incur fees for emergency deliveries. Autofill customers aren’t charged if their tank empties.
Do you have a minimum purchase amount for propane?
Partial deliveries are available by the gallon but are discouraged because of the increased number of deliveries per year to your tank. For economic and safety reasons, there are other ways to handle bills, such as pre-buying fuel, than making more/smaller deliveries. We can work it out so that it is a win/win for both the customer and the company. Most companies charge this, and most are much higher.
What are minimum use fees, and how can I avoid them?
Understanding and avoiding minimum use fees can be challenging, but we’re here to help. Propane tanks and regulators are very expensive, much more than you would expect. For this reason, we must change a fee if enough fuel is not used to justify the costly asset staying on your property. Here’s a quick guide to avoid them.
